Corrections Update 3/13/25 – Reinstatement Requests
At this point many state corrections officers have either resigned or put in for retirement. However, not all officers are in a position to do this based upon their personal or family situations and immediate medical needs.
For those who were sent a termination notice, DOCCS has signaled that they will entertain requests for reinstatement at this time. Below is a sample letter anyone can cut and paste and just add their name and proper date. Kirk & Teff, LLP, obviously does not condone any of the actions New York State has recently taken, and remain no less appalled today than we were yesterday, but we wanted this information to be publicly available to all officers just in case.
Some sources have told us that the reinstatement letter can be e-mailed to DOCCS. Other clients have said they were instructed that they need to hand-deliver the request. Therefore we recommend that any officer interested in submitting a request contact their facility to ask whether the request must be turned in personally or whether e-mail is sufficient and where to send it. We have also been told some requests need to have relevant medical records and/or out-of-work notes attached, so call first. The below sample can be modified or details added in any manner you see fit:

To Whom it May Concern:
I recently received a letter terminating my employment with the New York State Department of Corrections. By this correspondence I am formally requesting that I be reinstated to my previous position with DOCCS as soon as possible. If further information or documentation is needed, please advise me of this. If my request is granted, please inform me of the date and time I am directed to report in uniform.
